RESUMO

AIM: To test the potential of a newly isolated strain of Pseudomonas sp., and its optimization for carrying out bioremediation of textile azo dye Procion Red H-3B. METHOD: The isolation of the bacterial strain was done from a textile waste dumping site, followed by screening techniques to study the decolourization of an azo dye. The isolated pure culture was selected by its ability to form clear zones. The biochemical tests gave partial confirmation of the isolates, and the phylogenic analysis made the complete confirmation by 16S rRNA sequencing. RESULT: The identified strain belongs to the genus Pseudomonas. The phylogenic analysis confirmed that the strain belongs to Pseudomonas stutzeri. The culture exhibited maximum decolourization at pH between 6 and 8, the optimum at pH 7·5 and 37°C temperature. A maximum of 96% discolouration was observed at 50 mg l-1 of initial dye concentration after 24 h of incubation period. At a dye concentration equally or greater than 600 mg l-1 , the colour removal was drastically decreased to 30%. The use of fructose at 1% (w/v) and peptone 0·5% (w/v) concentration for 24 h of incubation, as carbon and nitrogen source, showed luxuriant decolourization. The results showed that the Pseudomonas sp. holds immense potential in treating textile effluents containing the dye Procion red H-3B. CONCLUSION: Pseudomonas is a known organism in bioremediation of various textile dyes but not much has being reported about the role of P. stutzeri in the bioremediation of azo dyes. This study revealed the immense potential of this strain in degrading the azo dyes. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The strain shows prospective for industrial application in the field of textile wastewater treatment. Bioremediation is comparatively cheaper and more effective treatment, thus holds promising future for a cleaner environment.

RESUMO

AIM: To assess the incidence of different head and neck cancers in pediatric age group in a referral hospital. METHODS: In this prospective study, children below the age of 12 years underwent a thorough clinical, ENT examination and the diagnosis was conformed histologically in all the cases. RESULTS: Fifty-three were diagnosed to be suffering from different head and neck neoplasms among 21,216 children (0.25%). Male-to-female sex distribution was 1.78:1. The lymphomas were the most common (43.39%) followed by the rhabdomyosarcoma (20.75%) and the nasopharyngeal carcinoma (15.09%). Of the lymphomas, the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was predominant (26.41%). Other lesions were thyroid carcinomas and mucoepidermoid carcinoma of parotid. CONCLUSIONS: Malignancy should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of masses in the head and neck region in children.

RESUMO

Primary neurogenic tumors in nose and paranasal sinuses are unusual entities. The majority of the reported cases have dealt with neurilemmomas and isolated neurofibromas are extremely rare. Here a case of neurofibroma of the paranasal sinuses is described.

RESUMO

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare, highly vascular, histologically benign but locally invasive tumour, affecting almost exclusively adolescent males. This is a prospective study of 37 patients with juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma treated during 3 years in our institution. The various pharyngeal and extrapharyngeal presentation staging and proper surgical approaches as per extensions are discussed here with reference to past reports.

RESUMO

Rhinosporidiosis is one of the common tropical diseases in ENT practice. In the present study, it constitutes about 1% hospital admission for E: surgery per annum. Nasal and extranasal involvement particularly occular involvement was critically examined in this study. Complete excision of rhinosporidial mass under endoscopie guidance for nasal rhinosporidiosis is found to give superior result in term of recurrence.

RESUMO

One hundred cases of chronic/recurring sinusitis cases were studied endoscopically with 0 degree (4 mm) rigid endoscopes in combination with conventional X-ray and computed tomography to reveal the exact nature of pathology which were sometimes not possible by our routine examination. After identification of the cause, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) was performed for cure and relief of symptoms. Messerklinger's technique was followed with good results and with minimum surgical trauma. Their results were correlated. Complications with possible management and long term results were discussed.
